Associations, Clubs & Charities - Dartmoor Pony Rescue Centre UK |
The Dartmoor Pony Rescue Centre (DPRC) is a voluntary organisation set up in 2005 to take on ponies that are not sold at the traditional Dartmoor pony sales held every October. These ponies are often male bay colts which are unpopular because of their plain colouring and it is also felt they will be to be harder to train due to their lively nature. Unfortunately, if these ponies aren’t sold at the sales, their future does not look very bright. We are working with a charity called the Dartmoor Pony Heritage Trust (http://www.dartmoorponytrust.com) who were set up to look at the problem of the low market value of the ponies on the moor. They are working on various schemes to promote the ponies, preserve the gene pool, and try and increase their market value. Unfortunately, in the meantime, there are still many ponies going every year for Zoo meat, and this is where the DPRC is involved. DPRC are attending the drifts in October and are looking to take on approximately 10 Dartmoor ponies. We have just taken on 4 foals, Reggie, Basil, Star and Socks (pictures will be on the website very soon) We will work naturally with these ponies in terms of habitat and handling, initially getting them used to positive human contact, and once old enough, training to be ridden. Our long term goal is to re-home the ponies on a loan basis, this way we can monitor their progress and assist with further training where needed. We are running sponsorship schemes on a monthly and yearly basis. Sponsoring a pony enables us to pay for a number of vital things including grazing costs, worming, vets bills etc. We rely entirely on sponsorship, donations and fundraising to ensure that the ponies can be looked after, trained and eventually re-homed. We have come up with 2 types of sponsorship to cater for varying budgets: 1) Monthly sponsorship. £8.50 per month This includes: · Sponsorship pack (Certificate of sponsorship, information on your pony including 2 photos of them.) · 3 updates per year including all the current news and photos of your pony. · The possibility of visiting your pony throughout the year to see how it is progressing with its training, (dates will have to be discussed with us prior to visiting,) and an invitation to our open day (date to be confirmed.) · A Christmas card from your pony! 2) Yearly sponsorship. £20 per year. This includes: · Sponsorship pack (Certificate of sponsorship, information on your pony and a photo of them. ) · An invitation to our open day and the opportunity to visit your pony (date to be confirmed.) We are also keen to hear from anyone in the local area who is interesting in volunteer work with the foals, it will be excellent experience with an untouched pony please look at www.dprc.org.uk for more information |
